A cloud region is a specific geographic area where a cloud provider hosts clusters of data centers. Each region consists of multiple availability zones that provide redundancy and fault isolation. When deploying systems, you choose a region to determine where your compute, storage, and databases physically reside. Regions are labeled by provider-specific codes such as us-east-1 or eu-central-1.
Why it matters
Choosing the right region affects performance, compliance, cost, and resilience. Locating resources near your users reduces network latency. Some industries require data to stay within legal boundaries, making region selection critical. Distributing resources across multiple regions can help build highly resilient systems.
